Laser Range Finder

Laser rangefinder is an instrument that uses a parameter of modulated laser to accurately measure the distance of the target. The pulse laser rangefinder emits a beam or a series of short pulse laser beams to the target when it works. The photoelectric element receives the laser beam reflected by the target. The timer measures the time of the laser beam from transmitting to receiving, and calculates the distance from the rangefinder to the target.

When the power of the laser beam is enough, the measuring range can reach about 40 km or more, and the laser rangefinder can work day and night, but when there is a material with high absorption rate of laser in space, the distance and accuracy of the ranging will decline.

The first laser in the world was a ruby laser developed by a scientist of Hughes Aircraft Company in 1960. The U.S. military soon carried out research on military laser devices on this basis. In 1961, the first military laser rangefinder passed the US military demonstration test. After that, the laser rangefinder soon entered the practical stage.

As the price of laser rangefinder is constantly decreasing, the industry has gradually started to use laser rangefinder. At home and abroad, there are a number of new micro rangefinders with the advantages of fast ranging, small size, reliable performance, which can be widely used in industrial measurement and control, mining, port and other fields.

Laser is a new technology developed in 1960s. It is a kind of light with pure color, highly concentrated energy and good directivity. Laser rangefinder is a kind of instrument which uses laser to measure distance. Its working principle is very simple: the distance is measured by measuring the time from the beginning of laser emission to the laser reflection from the target. For example, using a laser rangefinder to measure the distance of the moon, if the time from the start of laser emission to the reflection from the moon is determined to be 2.56 seconds, the one-way time of laser emission to the moon is equal to 1.28 seconds, and the speed of laser is the speed of light, which is equal to 300000 kilometers per second. Therefore, the measured distance between the moon and the earth is the product of one-way time and the speed of light, that is 384000 km. In order to transmit and receive laser, and timing, laser rangefinder is composed of laser transmitter, receiver, clock frequency oscillator and distance counter.

Laser rangefinder can also be used to track and range satellites, measure the flight height of aircraft, aim and range targets, and conduct topographic mapping and survey.
